Final Critique/ Printing

Critique, Making, Understand

Had my final critique today, was told to fix a few things including the colour of my numbers and to change my spare page(s) (make it nicer, cleaner and cover both pages not just the one). So, I fixed everything up, completely re made my cover again and then attempted to print a few times. Now, I just need to staple my booklet together ready for hand ins tomorrow and I also need to write my rationale.

Refining

Making

Just spent the whole day fixing up my mistakes and changing the things discussed in the critique. Attempted to make a cover, will do more on it tomorrow when I can look at my work again with fresher eyes. I made my back cover and am happy with it as its simple and not over bearing but effective.

WEEK 5!!!

Critique, Making

On Monday we got into groups of three so we could critique each others work. I was told to completely re-do my cover, add a title to my info page, move my info down on each of my spreads and to try and move my secondary info. On my spare page(s) to fix the heading, or to just re-work the whole page to make it look cleaner.

Today I printed out all of the screenshots I had taken during my process and started annotating them whilst waiting for a Tutor to look at my work. When it was my turn to be seen I was told by Lee (adding on as well to what my peers told me to fix) to look at changing the colour of my numbers as well and to change my back page, keep it simple but clean and to just fix up all the little mistakes like making sure everything perfectly lines up etc.

Creating full Brochure Mock-Up

Making

Decided to move my image up to give myself some white space where I can set my title and location info.
I decided I didn't fully like the red number so changed it to white so you could see it more. I then moved it onto InDesign to work out my grid/ type properly.

I then decided to overlay a circular pattern to add to the information about the location. In this instance its quite a quirky, non stick in the mud kind of place. I then set up my other locations in the same manner just changing the circular pattern for each destination. I then attempted to make the rest of my brochure, however I'm not so confident about it so can't wait for the critique tomorrow.

Interim Critique and Type

Critique, Making, Understand

Yesterday we learnt about type. We learnt that justified is not a good way to type paragraphs as it leaves rivers and is not aesthetically pleasing or easy to read. Another thing was what different kinds of type their are and I decided that Sans Serif would be what I would want to use because I needed something non busy to compliment my busy images.

Then we had one on one critiques with Lee and/ or Caroline and we discussed how using the grid would benefit my work along with finding the right colour type to go over my images.

Today we discussed what we could possibly put on our spare page(s) and I decided I wanted to do a checklist because I think it would go with the fact that its shopping and many people shop with lists that they like to tick of. I also worked on developing my brochure format/ ideas...

Full Scale mock up

Making

Made a fullscale mock up of my brochure using Photoshop, Illustrator and In Design to take into class on Monday. Played around with different layouts, text size etc. until I was happy with my progress. Wont know how it really looks until I print it out though.

This was one of my attempts, unsure on how the white type will look when printed however.

Week 3/ Grids

Understand / Define / Ideate / Making / Critique

In our lecture on Monday we learnt about Visual Language, Aesthetics and Style. We then went back into our class and split into groups to discuss and work out the 'tone', 'flavour', 'style', 'mood' in art books and also what we think we need to try to express about our own destinations.
On Tuesday we learnt about grid and how it is used to format text in an aesthetically pleasing way. Then we played around with thumbnails in how we (using grid) could format our pages. We also learnt a little about In Design.

Visual Experimentations (Individual Studies)

Making

Attempted making them on my computer but got angry with it, so in stead i did them by hand in my workbook. Playing around with colour palette, layout and pattern. Also came up with some secondary information ideas (symbols?).

Lecture and Collaging Ideas

Understand / Making / Ideate

On Monday had learnt about visual cues; signs, icons and symbols in a lecture. We were then asked for homework to assign these visual cues to each of our destinations/ activities. For example, all of my destinations have for an icon a clothes hanger, because people relate that to clothes and op shopping.
Today we had to bring in our visual research,so posters we had found that interested us and our collages that combined icon, index and symbols for each destination. During the class we went more in-depth about the visual cues and played around with them more in class.

I think this colour swatch would suit what I'm trying to express with my brochure, so Ill try it out when I do my visual experimentations.

This background/ texture really reminds/ evokes the idea of op shops for me. Old, but can still be nice in certain circumstances.

Planning/ Homework

Understand / Ideate

Finally started planning properly about what i want to do for my destination/ activity set. I have decided to do Op-Shopping, so Hunters & Collectors, Recycle Boutique and the Salvation Army.
I went into all three stores and took some photos, then had some of them printed out ready for Mondays class. I also researched all three stores online to gain more in depth knowledge on the differences and similarities the three stores have.

I really liked the pattern on these chairs from Hunters & Collectors, and I think i can go more in-depth with this pattern, or similar.
